Joe Sakic is the gold standard when it comes to players who have donned the Colorado Avalanche uniform. When the franchise moved from Quebec in 1995, the Hall-of-Famer was tasked with ushering in a new era as team captain, and he handled the responsibility perfectly. Sakic immediately helped establish the Avalanche as a consistent winner that became expected to make the playoffs year in and year out. In their first season in Colorado, the team secured its first Stanley Cup behind a 34-point performance from Sakic that earned him honors as the MVP of the playoffs. They did not settle for just one as an MVP winning regular season from the captain led to a second Stanley Cup in 2001. Sakic’s on ice dominance continued for the rest of his career, as he still remains in the top ten on the all time NHL points scored list. In a franchise with many great players during and since Sakic’s career, he still remains the most important to the Colorado Avalanche franchise.
