Theros: Beyond Death, The Spoilers Begin

Magic: The Gatherings 83rd official set releases next month on January 23rd, kicking off the new year with a bang.

Theros: Beyond Death, The Spoilers Begin

Players around the globe are eagerly awaiting their chance to return to the mythical Plane of Theros, a land which is dominated by ancient mythological gods, inspired by those from the Greek mythos.

However, Theros: Beyond Death comes with a twist, as players just won’t simply be visiting this Plane, but rather the Underworld that is contained below its surface, where lost souls of the past now call home, such as the epic heroin Elspeth Tirel.

For those looking to get caught up on the story of Theros, we highly recommend visiting Wizards of the Coast lore page, which offer a fantastic look into the rich history surrounding this fan favorite Plane.

But for now, we are going to take a deeper look into the just recently released news surrounding this soon to be released set, of which we can’t wait to share with you.

Theros: Beyond Death Theme and Keywords

Next months set release, Theros: Beyond Death is a continuation of the Theros block, of which we last visited in 2013.

Previous Theros themed sets have had a focus on powerful, mythical Pantheon Gods, of which dominate the Plane of Theros and the people who inhabit it.

The people and creatures that make up Theros worship these gods and thus the keyword “Devotion” is a part of the Theros sets.

Devotion rewards the player for focusing on one, or more mana colors and cards will often come with passive abilities that increase in value / activate the more you focus on these specific colors.

For example, one of the cards just spoiled this week is the Legendary Enchantment Creature God Athreos, Shroud-Veiled.

As can be seen from above, this is a powerful Mythic Rare card in the Orzhov colors and of which rewards the player for having seven or more black and or white mana symbols on the board, making Athreos an indestructible 4/7 beater.

Also often associated with the Plane of Theros are “Enchantments”, of which there are typically a plethora of, which means you will be buffing and making your creatures all that much more powerful as you play your way through this set.

An example of this is Setessan Champion, who is a creature that grows both in power and toughness with each enchantment that you play, while also acting as a powerful draw engine.

As can be seen above, the keyword associated with this in the upcoming Theros: Beyond Death set is “Constellation”.

The Main Planeswalkers of Theros: Beyond Death

So far, from what we know, two of the pivotal and key Planeswalkers that will be appearing in the Theros: Beyond death set are Ashiok, Nightmare Muse and Elspeth, Sun’s Nemesis.

We suspect that other Planeswalkers are likely to make appearances within this set, possibly even Gideon Jura, who recently passed away in the War of the Spark expansion set, as the Underworld of Theros is where the deceased souls of this Plane go once they perish.

Gideon Jura is a native of Theros, who hails from the Akros region, of which is inspired by ancient Sparta. You can read all about Gideon’s lore here.

Both Elspeth, Sun’s Nemesis and Ashiok, Nightmare Muse are expected to see play in the Standard format, as they are both powerful looking Planeswalkers, of which the former is likely to appear in a “White Weenie” aggro style decks and the latter in a more controlling Dimir style deck.

Theros: Beyond Death Official Trailer

The next exciting piece of news that we must share with you is the recently released official trailer for the Theros: Beyond Death expansion set, which made its debut on December 12th.

Be warned, it is an incredibly chilling and creepy look into the Underworld of Theros.

Both of the previous mentioned Planeswalkers, Elspeth and Ashiok are featured within this trailer and as can be seen at the end of the video, the words “escape your fate” appear.

Wizards of the Coast elaborates further on these words;

“In Theros, the pantheon of gods vies for undying devotion among their mortal subjects. But in the Underworld, there is only one master: the Lord of the Dead. Break free from death’s shackles as a hero reborn. Choose your god and fight in their name…or forge a destiny all your own.”

Since the release of the War of the Spark trailer, Wizards of the Coast has been finding its stride with these trailers, with each one finding incredibly success due to their high quality production and popularity amongst fans of the game.

This one followed that trend and fortunately did not disappoint.
