Pokémon Anniversary Mid-Year – Part 1
Part 1 – The Year so Far
June marks the halfway point of 2016, and of Pokemon’s year-long 20th Anniversary celebration. The first half of the year has already seen some awesome releases so we wanted to take a minute to reflect. In part 2 we’ll take a look forward – and do a little speculating – about what’s to come.
The Releases
Generations
For sure the biggest draw has been the Generations expansion that can only be obtained form the Anniversary collections. This has caused a bit of controversy of course, but nonetheless it’s hard to dispute the fact that it’s a cool set.
Generations includes a host of new cards, as well as reprints (with some new artistic flair) of the original base set. For someone like me who first got into Pokemon with the original Red & Blue video games for Game Boy, and subsequently the early TCG releases, it’s been really quite heartening to see. It shows that while Pokemon as a company is always looking forward, they haven’t forgotten their roots.
On a more practical note, let’s not forget that the inclusion of these old-school cards means they’re legal in Standard format play.
What’s Behind and What’s Ahead
The year so far has been interesting to say the least. The big surprises are mostly out of the way, but with Pokemon’s announcement of Generations Elite Trainer Box, there’s still a lot to look forward to. The best may still be ahead of us.
Stay tuned for part 2 where we look at the year ahead of us.
