Canucks Recap: October 2019

The first month of the NHL season has already come and gone, and what a month it’s been for our hometown team, the Vancouver Canucks! Currently sitting in third in a tight Pacific Division race, the Canucks are playing better than they have in years. Now it’s time to see if this young, promising team can get back to the playoffs!

The eventful first month began with a ceremony honouring the past, as former Canucks legends Stan Smyl, Kirk McLean, Todd Bertuzzi, and Daniel Sedin came out with this year’s team to celebrate the start of the Canucks’ 50th season. Then Orland Kurtenbach and Henrik Sedin, the first and most recent team captains respectively, came out to name Bo Horvat the new Canucks captain. It was a befitting way to celebrate the team’s history while anticipating the exciting things to come.

It hasn’t taken long for last year’s Calder-winning superstar Elias Pettersson to find his groove. Picking up where he left off last season, Pettersson currently has a team-leading twenty-five points. On November 2nd’s Hockey Night in Canada game against the San Jose Sharks, Pettersson netted two goals, including an absolute beauty that only a select few on this planet could have buried.

With a new contract signed and his future in Vancouver now settled, young sniper Brock Boeser is back at it, scoring goals, racking up points, and letting loose his magnificent flow! In a lopsided dismantling of the Los Angeles Kings on October 30th, Boeser got his first hat trick of the season with the help of linemate Pettersson, both of them scoring four points that night.

And of course we have to mention the latest Canucks rookie phenom, defenseman Quinn Hughes. Hughes is just one month into his NHL career and has already earned the trust of his coach and the adoration of the fans. With two goals and twelve assists in twenty games, Hughes has become the leader of the Canucks powerplay and is one of the favourites to win the Calder Trophy this season.
